Carrier Oils

Benefits & PKMH Recommendations

Plants are used to make carrier oils and essential oils. Carrier oils dilute essential oils and "carry" them to your skin. Most carrier oils are unscented or lightly scented and do not interfere with the therapeutic properties of essential oils. They can be used alone or in combination with other oils to nourish your skin.

 

The carrier oils listed below are commonly used to dilute essential oils for aromatherapy, massage, and skin care.


The list is not exhaustive, but it is a good starting point:


Coconut oil is a type of edible oil that is extracted from the meat of mature coconuts. It is available in refined and unrefined forms. Coconut oil is high in skin-nourishing fatty acids and polyphenols, making it an excellent carrier oil for massage oils and skin care products.

The seeds of the jojoba plant are used to make jojoba oil. It has a mild, nutty aroma. Jojoba oil absorbs quickly and does not clog pores. As a result, it is an excellent carrier oil for massage oils, facial moisturizers, and bath oils.

Apricot kernel oil is extracted from apricot seeds, which are also known as kernels. It's an emollient oil with a high fatty acid and vitamin E content. Apricot kernel oil is said to soften and soothe irritated, itchy skin.

The aroma of sweet almond oil is strong and nutty. It is a type of edible oil derived from the kernels of sweet almonds. One of the most popular carrier oils for skin care is sweet almond oil. It works well in massage oils, bath oils, and soaps.

Olive oil is extracted from pressed olives. It is best known as a healthy, edible oil with a fruity aroma, but it is also used as a carrier oil in aromatherapy and for cleansing and moisturising dry skin.

Argan oil is extracted from the kernels of argan trees, which are native to Morocco. Argan oil can be used to treat dry skin and hair, as well as wrinkles and skin inflammation. As a result, it's an excellent carrier oil for general skin care and massage oils.

Rosehips are the seeds of the Rosa rubiginosa and Rosa moschata plants. Vitamins A and C are abundant in rosehip oil. Vitamin A is a naturally occurring retinoid that aids in the fight against aging, and both vitamins can help reverse the effects of the sun on your skin.

The Nigella sativa plant is used to make black seed oil. Black seed oil is frequently used as a folk remedy to treat skin conditions such as eczema, acne, and psoriasis.

Grape seed oil comes from grape seeds. It’s a byproduct of the winemaking process. Grape seed oil is lightweight, easily absorbed by the skin, and has a neutral scent. It’s a good carrier oil to use with essential oils to make body oils and massage oils.

Avocado oil is a heavy, thick, edible oil made from avocado fruitThis can be a good carrier oil for dry skin remedies and body creams — unless you’re dealing with acne.

Whichever oil you choose, avoid using it on your lips, eyes, or other sensitive areas after it’s been mixed with an essential oil. However, you can safely apply a carrier oil by itself to these areas.
